Thomas Alva Edison (1847 bis 1931) wurde oft von seinen Gästen gefragt, warum er, als einer der größten Physiker, ein Gartentor habe, dass unwahrscheinlich schwer gehe.
Er erklärte dann schmunzelnd, dass jeder Besucher 20 Liter Wasser in seine Zisterne pumpe, wenn er das Tor betätige.
Als Edison statt des 20-l-Gefäßes eines mit 25 Litern benutzte, waren 12 Gäste weniger nötig, um seine Zisterne zu füllen.

Wie groß war das Fassungsvermögen der Zisterne?

20x + 240 = 25x |:20

x + 12 = 1.25x |-x

12 = 0,25x |*4

48 = x

Das war die Gästezahl bei 25l, somit brauchen wir 1200l, damit die Zisterne voll ist.
