"kontor" (short version of "Handelsgesellschaft warenlager mit kai") is a "warehouse with harbour".

"port" = "hafen",

"hafenstadt": "stadt" = "town", "city", so that's a city with a big harbour, for example hamburg is a welknown german hafenstadt.

back to 1701: every player can only build one port(kontor) per island.

I understand more now.

English guild = an association of men with common aims and interests; especially a medieval association of merchants or craftsmen. The building they used = guild-hall.

The only problem I have with kontor = branch office is that such implies that there is a main office somewhere.
